SPEECH AND DEBATE CLUB BASICS / GRADES 3-5

It is better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating it – French philosopher Joseph Joubert.

Debate is a formal contest of argumentation between two teams or individuals. Effective debate requires reasoned argument and a tolerance for different points of view. Debate is, above all, a way for those who hold opposing views to discuss issues without resorting to insult or bias. A key aspect of debate is that it rarely ends in agreement, but rather, allows for the careful and thoughtful analysis of the question at hand. Classes will learn the rules of debate, how to improve their public speaking skills, and apply research skills to formulate a sound position on various topics. This class is open to students that have previously taken Speech and Debate as well as those who are new to the program. All materials and costs will be included in tuition. LIMIT 18 STUDENTS

ALDEN GIRLS ATHLETIC TRAINING       GRADES 3 - 5

Please join Alden P.E. teacher Mrs. Nissi for an Alden Girls Athletic Training Course! In general girls have less access to sports and fitness training than boys. At the elementary level we start to notice gender differences in athletic ability and confidence, which may be a result of that difference in access. This course is designed to close that gap and give girls more opportunity to improve on both their fitness and athletic ability. Through sports, girls learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence. This course will include running, strength training, skill work and stretching exercises such as yoga. If you are a girl in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade, and you’re looking to improve your skills for a particular sport or activity, or even just to be as fit and healthy as possible, this course is for you. Expect to work hard but have fun as well! Although this course is geared to Alden Elementary girls, Alden Elementary boys may register as well. Max# of students: 18
